A Fond Farewell to our Founder

Peter Baer Retires After Over Three Decades of Practice

After nearly four decades of enhancing lives and communities through architecture, Peter Baer is retiring from Pinnacle Architecture. When Peter named the firm, he wanted something that would live beyond his ownership. Peter describes “Pinnacle” as always looking up to achieve a new goal and striving to be the best. And that is exactly what has happened. He has readied Briana Manfrass, Pinnacle’s new President, for the last 18 years to continue to lead Pinnacle into the future along with Jessica Biel, Vice President, and Ryan Cain, Principal. Read more about the new leaders here.

Peter’s journey has been defined by the relationships he has built with clients, mentorship of numerous staff, and his commitment to excellence. As we celebrate his retirement, we reflect on his remarkable career and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.

Impact on Practice and Community

Peter’s journey with Pinnacle began in the humblest of settings—his basement. In the fall of 1990, during a recession and with a baby on the way, Peter and his wife, Patrice, decided to take a leap of faith. With a $1,500 investment in a computer and software, Pinnacle Architecture was born with the vision of creating a firm that would not only design buildings but also positively impact the community.

Just a few months after starting the firm, Peter hired his first employee and moved into a small office on 3rd Street in Bend. This marked the beginning of Pinnacle’s growth. The firm quickly garnered a reputation for excellence, securing its first projects through word of mouth and community connections. From single-family homes to public buildings, Peter’s human approach and dedication to quality set Pinnacle apart from the start.

“Along the way you have been a wealth of information and more importantly a fountain of goodness. There are not enough words to express my gratitude for you, Peter,” – Kimberly Lindsay, Executive Director, Community Counseling Solutions

Peter’s leadership and passion have guided the firm through numerous successful projects, each reflecting his thoughtful and holistic approach to design. From the early days in rural Oregon, where he guided and educated clients through the design process, to the countless hours spent ensuring that every project met his rigorous standards, Peter’s dedication has been unwavering. His impact extends far beyond the walls of Pinnacle, creating a profound ripple effect within the community.

“From the first assessment of our beloved 100-year-old community hall, to its grand opening celebration 24 years later, you were always right by my side. Through it all, you became much more than my architect, you became my friend.” – Ruthie Moore, Retired City Recorder, City of Dayville

Legacy and Future Vision

Peter’s legacy is one of integrity, relationships, and community. His work at Pinnacle has set a high standard for future generations. As the firm grew, Peter transitioned ownership to a senior leadership team, ensuring that Pinnacle’s mission of enhancing lives and communities would continue past his tenure. Today, Pinnacle operates out of two offices, with a dedicated team carrying forward Peter’s vision.

“Peter is an exceptional mentor and leader who always aimed for the firm to continue beyond his career. My goal is to build on our solid foundation and grow the firm in a way that continues to focus on the people, internally and externally. We will continue to be trusted partners and create meaningful designs. Pinnacle’s vision is to be the catalyst for improving communities. Our approach strives to explore beyond the ordinary to make a greater impact within and beyond our projects and be inspired while we’re doing it! I’m excited to continue to build upon our vision with our smart, creative, and compassionate team.” – Briana Manfrass, President of Pinnacle.

Peter’s final project before retirement was particularly meaningful – the restoration of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Bend. This project held a special significance for Peter, as his family has been parish members since 1917. The church, a historic landmark in Bend, underwent a comprehensive restoration to preserve its architectural beauty and historical integrity. Peter’s involvement in the project was a fitting culmination of his career, blending his professional expertise with his personal history.

“The renovation and restoration of St. Francis Historic Church was not an easy project. But Peter took it upon himself as the crown of his career and commitment to his faith. His dedication and sacrifices to see it through will always be a testimony to his love for God and the community.” – Rev. Jose Thomas Mudakodiyil
