CANYON EDGE
Filling a Housing Need in the Community
With so many rent-burdened residents in the region, the addition of Canyon Edge (aka Red Canyon) is critical to helping solve Central Oregon’s housing crisis. It is a unique project, spread across two sites just 300 feet apart amongst other multi-family and single-family homes. The client wanted to maximize the number of housing units while providing quality homes that integrate into the community. During the design process, Pinnacle was able to save $130,000 by fast-tracking the schedule and submitting the plans for permitting before an increase in permit fees.
Canal North was a challenging site with space for one 3-story building. The exterior design drew inspiration from townhomes with vertical and horizontal siding patterns to break down the scale of the building. The building includes an office for easy access to the property manager and 29 two- and three-bedroom homes. A playground provides an oasis for children, and well-lit walking paths connect residents to their homes from the parking lot.
Canal South consists of two three-story buildings, including 38 homes and a community room. The unit mix includes one, two, and three bedrooms to provide a variety of options. A courtyard with landscaping and seating creates an outdoor community space for gathering. The exterior design mimics Canal North tying the two developments together.
All homes have private outdoor patios with storage. Large windows bring in daylight, and efficient and open floorplans create a base for family living.
This project was part of an Oregon Housing & Community Services funded portfolio, including Rolling Sage. Both projects were designed and constructed simultaneously. Through great collaboration with Housing Works and R&H Construction, construction was completed successfully during the pandemic.
