LIBERTY PARK VILLAGE

A Safe Home for Veterans

When planning for a new veteran housing community, creating a sense of safety and community were top priorities. Many of the residents may be experiencing PTSD or other mental health conditions; therefore, every aspect of the project was viewed through a human-centered design lens. Focusing on the needs of those who use the space. The layout of the two buildings creates a central courtyard where the eight one-bedroom homes open to well-lit walkways. The front exterior entrances include half walls to allow residents to exit their units, observe, then proceed slowly. The courtyard design provides opportunities for residents to interact daily. The attached community building includes meeting space and a full kitchen for group functions, office to provide veteran services, and onsite laundry.

The interior design is minimal using white and natural tones for a calming environment. Large windows bring in daylight while allowing full views of the courtyard for security. The floor plans are based on universal design (equal access for all abilities) boasting open living/dining areas and ADA bathrooms in all units. Special consideration went into choosing durable materials and appliances to ease the cost of long-term maintenance for the housing authority. The interior light is Energy Star compliant and includes LED lighting to reduce energy costs for residents.

The new veteran housing development is a retreat for those who have served our country.
