HEAD START

Inspiring Young Minds

This project began with a hunt by the City for the perfect parcel of land. For decades this particular Head Start and the accompanied WIC offices functioned out of rented spaces, not knowing when they would have to relocate. The new project created a stable, quality environment for the children of Milton-Freewater.

For the design, Pinnacle focused on creating an aesthetically pleasing and developmentally appropriate space for the children. The program includes two large classrooms, a conference room, WIC offices, a shared office, a large playground, and a full-service kitchen. Warm hues wash over the walls with bright splashes of children’s artwork. Expansive windows reach from just below the ceilings to the height where curious eyes of the children can peer through. Colorful rugs brighten up the room’s maple finished wood floors. Just what you would expect in a Head Start early learning center, all while being mindful of the strict budget and time constraints that accompany a project funded through a community development block grant.

“Pinnacle designed two great buildings for us. People who visit are impressed.” – Cathy Wamsley, UMHS Executive Director (retired), regarding Milton-Freewater Head Start and Victory Square Head Start

With attention to energy-efficient design, the Milton-Freewater Head Start earned Earth Advantage Silver certification.
